What is Kicker in poker?

The second card in a player’s hand, which can be used to break ties. For example, if one player has AK and another player has A9, on a board of AJ743 the player holding AK will win the hand at showdown because their K is a stronger kicker than the other player’s 9. In this situation, the player with A9 can be said to be outkicked. Be aware that a kicker can not be in play because it doesn't outrank enough of the cards on the board.
